Personal Coverage

Auto Insurance.

Everyone shops this on price. Almost nobody checks the number that decides what happens after a serious accident.

Auto is the policy people compare most and understand least. The premium is easy to see, so it becomes the whole conversation, while liability limits and uninsured motorist coverage sit underneath deciding what actually happens after a serious accident.

Because we work with a very wide range of carriers, we can usually reduce what you pay and raise those limits at the same time. Carriers price the same driver very differently, and from inside one company you have no way of knowing. Send us your declarations page in the chat and we will price it against the whole market.

Compare My Rate Common Questions
The number that matters

Your liability limit is the whole policy

Collision protects your car. Liability protects everything else you own, and everything you will earn.

Liability pays for the injuries and damage you cause to other people. It is written as three numbers: injury per person, injury per accident, and property damage. When those limits are exhausted, the claim does not stop. It continues against you personally, and in most states that can reach your savings, your home equity and your future wages.

State minimums are the problem. They were set long ago and never kept pace with what a modern vehicle costs to replace or what a hospital charges for a serious injury. A single accident involving a newer car and one injured person can exhaust a minimum limit before anyone has discussed lost income or long-term care.

What the limits mean

Written as three figures. The first is the maximum per injured person, the second the maximum for all injuries in one accident, the third is property damage. Property damage minimums in particular have not kept pace with vehicle prices.

Where the exposure lands

Beyond the limit, the claim becomes personal. Judgments can attach to wages and assets, and unlike most debts they do not simply disappear. This is the risk people insure least and worry about least.

Raising limits is cheap

Moving from a minimum limit to a substantial one usually costs a modest amount per month, because severe claims are rare. It is the highest-value dollar on the entire policy.

Then consider an umbrella

Once liability is at a solid level, a personal umbrella adds a further layer across both auto and home for a surprisingly low premium. For anyone with assets or income to protect, it is the obvious next step.

The structure

What "full coverage" leaves out

Full coverage is not a defined term. It usually means liability plus collision plus comprehensive, and it tells you nothing about the limits, the deductibles, or whether the coverages that matter most are even present.

Liability

Injury and property damage you cause to others. The core of the policy and the one to buy properly.

Collision

Damage to your own vehicle from an impact, regardless of fault. Subject to your deductible, and required by any lender or lessor.

Comprehensive

Damage that is not a collision: theft, fire, hail, flood, falling objects, animal strikes, glass. Usually carries a lower deductible than collision, and glass is often handled separately.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Pays when the driver who hit you has no coverage or not enough. Around one in eight drivers is uninsured nationally, and many more carry only minimums. Inexpensive, and one of the most likely coverages to be used.

Medical payments and PIP

Medical costs for you and your passengers regardless of fault. Required in no-fault states, optional in others, and it fills gaps a health plan deductible leaves open.

Rental and roadside

Small coverages that matter on the day you need them. A rental car while yours is repaired, and towing after a breakdown, for very little premium.

What we can usually do

Lower the premium, and raise the limits

Carrier appetite changes constantly. The company that priced you best three years ago may not want your vehicle, your ZIP code or your driving profile today, and a company that ignored you then may be competing hard for it now. Loyalty is not rewarded in this line, and there is no way to discover that from inside a single carrier.

Same coverage, lower cost

We start with a genuine like-for-like comparison. Identical limits and deductibles, priced across the market, so you can see plainly whether you are overpaying.

Better limits, similar cost

Then we show what it costs to raise liability and add uninsured motorist properly. Frequently the better-priced carrier makes both possible at once.

Bundled with home or renters

The most reliable discount in personal lines, and it usually applies to both policies rather than one. We price it bundled and separate and show you the total.

After a ticket or a claim

This is when shopping matters most and people do it least. Carriers weight incidents very differently, and a record that prices badly at one company often prices reasonably at another.

The fastest way to find out

Send us your declarations page, and we will price it against the market.

One page, usually the first page of your policy documents. It lists your vehicles, drivers, limits and deductibles, which is everything needed to price it accurately rather than estimate. No cost and no obligation.

How rates are set

What actually moves your premium

Understanding this makes the spread between quotes far less mysterious. Every carrier uses broadly the same inputs and weighs them completely differently.

Driving record

Accidents and violations, usually looked at over three to five years. The weighting varies enormously between carriers, which is why one incident can be priced very differently across the market.

The vehicle itself

Repair cost, theft rates, safety performance and parts availability. Modern sensors and cameras in bumpers and windscreens made routine repairs substantially more expensive, and that is reflected in premiums.

Where it is garaged

Rated at ZIP code level, based on local claim frequency, theft, weather and repair costs. Moving a short distance can change a premium meaningfully.

Age and experience

Young drivers price high because the claim data supports it. Adding a teenager to an existing policy is almost always cheaper than a separate policy for them.

Credit-based insurance score

Used in most states and a significant factor where permitted. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan restrict or prohibit it, which changes the competitive picture in those states.

Coverage choices

Limits, deductibles and optional coverages. Raising a deductible lowers the premium, and only makes sense if you could comfortably pay it on the day.

Situations people miss

Where personal auto policies stop

Rideshare and delivery

Personal policies exclude commercial use, and there is a known gap between the app being on and a passenger being aboard. A rideshare endorsement closes it cheaply. Driving without one is a real exposure.

Business use

Regular use for work beyond commuting, carrying tools or equipment, or a vehicle titled to a business generally needs a commercial auto policy rather than a personal one.

Gap coverage on a loan or lease

If the car is totalled, the payout is its value that day, which on a newer vehicle is frequently less than the loan balance. Gap coverage pays the difference and is inexpensive.

New car replacement

Some carriers will replace a totalled new vehicle with a new one rather than pay depreciated value, within the first year or two. It is not standard and it is worth asking for.

Household members who drive

Anyone in the household with regular access to the car generally needs to be listed. Leaving someone off to lower the premium is the most common cause of a denied claim.

Rental cars and travel

Your policy usually extends to a rental car in the United States, which frequently makes the counter waiver unnecessary. It rarely extends abroad.

How we approach an auto policy

We ask for the declarations page before quoting anything. It shows your actual limits, deductibles, listed drivers and endorsements, and it takes the guesswork out entirely. Comparing premiums without it is comparing two numbers that may describe completely different policies.

Then we price two things. A genuine like-for-like against the market, so you can see whether you are overpaying for exactly what you have. And what we would actually recommend, usually with higher liability and proper uninsured motorist coverage, so you can see what the difference costs. Very often the second is cheaper than what you pay today.

We price the bundle both ways as well. Auto with home or renters is the most reliable discount available, and it usually reduces both policies rather than one.

And if your current policy is already competitive and correctly written, we will tell you so. That happens more often than you would expect, and saying it is worth more to us than a policy you would resent.

Before you compare on price

Check your liability limit.

It is the first line on your declarations page and the one that decides what happens after a serious accident. Two quotes that look identical on price are often nothing alike here.

Questions we hear daily

Auto insurance, answered plainly

Is state minimum coverage enough?+

Almost never. State minimums were set decades ago and have not kept pace with what vehicles and medical care actually cost. A single serious accident can produce a claim well beyond a minimum limit, and once the policy is exhausted the remainder comes from you personally, including future wages. Minimum coverage is legal, not adequate.

What does full coverage actually mean?+

It is not a real term, which is part of the problem. It usually describes liability plus collision plus comprehensive. It says nothing about how high your liability limits are, whether you carry uninsured motorist coverage, or what your deductibles are, and those are the parts that decide whether a claim goes well.

Why did my premium rise when I did not make a claim?+

Auto rates rose across the entire market rather than because of you. Vehicles carry far more technology and cost substantially more to repair, medical costs rose, and severe accidents became more frequent and more expensive. Carriers repriced whole states, and it lands on renewals regardless of individual history.

What is uninsured motorist coverage and do I need it?+

It pays when the person who hit you has no insurance or not enough of it. Roughly one in eight drivers nationally is uninsured, and far more carry only state minimums. It is one of the least expensive coverages on the policy and one of the most likely to be used.

How is my rate actually calculated?+

Driving record, vehicle, annual mileage, garaging address, age and years licensed, coverage selections, and in most states a credit-based insurance score. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan restrict or prohibit the use of credit. Two carriers can weigh identical facts very differently, which is why the spread between quotes is often wide.

Should I drop collision on an older car?+

Sometimes. The usual test is whether the annual collision and comprehensive premium exceeds roughly ten percent of what the car is worth. If the car is worth two thousand dollars and you carry a thousand dollar deductible, the coverage is doing very little. It is a calculation rather than a rule.

Does my policy cover me driving for a rideshare or delivery app?+

Not usually. Personal auto policies exclude commercial use, and there is a well-known gap between the app being on and a passenger being in the car. Some carriers sell a rideshare endorsement to close it, and it is inexpensive. Driving without it is a genuine exposure.

Will one ticket or claim ruin my rate?+

Usually not permanently. Most surcharges fall off after three to five years, and carriers differ enormously in how heavily they weight a given incident. A record that prices badly at one company frequently prices reasonably at another, which is exactly why shopping the market matters more after an incident than before one.
