Commercial Coverage

Retail Coverage.

Your stock peaks in November and your policy limit was set in March.

Retail carries two exposures most owners underestimate. The first is inventory value, which is not a fixed number: a limit that fits in spring can be badly short at the height of a season, and property policies settle on what was insured rather than what was there.

The second is product liability, and resellers assume it belongs to the manufacturer. It frequently does not. Anyone in the distribution chain can be named, and if the maker is overseas you become the practical defendant. Send us your policy and we will check both.

Review My Program Common Questions
The two exposures owners underestimate

Stock, and products

Inventory is not a fixed number

What sits on shelves in a peak week can be several times the quiet-season figure. Policies settle against the limit, not against what was actually there.

Coinsurance bites on small claims

Under-insure the stock and every claim is reduced proportionally. A modest water loss can be cut by a quarter because of a limit set for a quieter month.

Product liability follows the chain

Reselling does not insulate you. Anyone commercially involved can be named, and a distant manufacturer makes the retailer the reachable defendant.

Peak season endorsements

Raise the limit for defined months at a fraction of carrying it year round. Underused, and exactly the right tool for this problem.

The program

What a retailer should be carrying

General liability

Customer injury, which is the most frequent claim in retail. Slips, falls, displays and parking areas.

Property and stock

Fit-out, fixtures, equipment and inventory. Tenant improvements are yours to insure if you lease, and they are commonly omitted.

Product liability

For what you sell, whether or not you made it. Vendor endorsements from suppliers reduce the exposure at no cost to you.

Crime and employee dishonesty

Theft by staff is a material share of retail shrinkage and is not covered by standard property terms.

Business interruption

Income and continuing costs while closed. Seasonal timing should be built into how the limit is set.

Cyber

Card payment data and online sales. Increasingly a requirement from payment processors as well as a genuine exposure.

Situations that need care

Where retail policies fall short

Online sales

Shipping nationwide exposes you in every state you sell into, and platform requirements frequently exceed what a small policy carries.

Private label goods

Putting your name on a product generally makes you the manufacturer for liability purposes. Many retailers do this without realising what changes.

Pop-ups and markets

Temporary locations are often outside the scheduled premises on your policy. Easy to endorse in advance, uncovered without it.

Stock off premises

Warehousing, transit and consignment. Standard policies limit off-site property tightly, and inland marine handles it properly.

Landlord requirements

Leases specify limits and additional insured status. Meeting them on paper and in the policy are two different things.

Seasonal staff

Headcount rises sharply at peak, which affects workers’ compensation payroll and creates an audit adjustment nobody planned for.

What we can usually do

Value it properly, then shop it

Set the stock limit against peak

With a seasonal endorsement rather than a year-round figure. Cheaper, and it removes the coinsurance risk when it matters.

Chase vendor endorsements

Free protection from your own suppliers, and the single most effective step a reseller can take on product exposure.

Add crime coverage

Employee dishonesty is frequently the largest uninsured loss a retailer carries, and the premium is modest.

Then shop appetite

Retail appetite varies by category, location and whether you sell online. The spread between carriers on the same shop is wide.

The fastest way to find out

Send us your policy and we will check the stock limit against your peak.

That comparison, plus whether product liability and crime coverage are actually present, tells you where a claim would fall short. No cost, no obligation.

Questions we hear daily

Retail insurance, answered plainly

How should I value my stock?+

On replacement cost at the level you actually hold, not the average across the year. Most property policies contain a coinsurance clause, and being under-insured reduces every claim proportionally, including small ones. Peak season values are what expose the gap.

Can I increase the limit just for the busy season?+

Yes. A peak season endorsement raises the stock limit for defined months and costs far less than carrying the higher figure all year. It is one of the most useful and least used endorsements in retail.

Am I liable for a product I only resold?+

Frequently, yes. Strict liability can attach to anyone in the distribution chain, and injured parties name everyone. If the manufacturer is overseas or insolvent, the retailer becomes the practical defendant.

What is a vendor endorsement?+

An endorsement on a manufacturer's policy extending cover to the retailers selling their product. Asking every supplier to name you as an additional insured with vendor status costs you nothing and is the strongest protection a reseller has.

Does my policy cover employee theft?+

Not under standard property coverage. Employee dishonesty is a crime coverage, and in retail it accounts for a meaningful share of inventory loss. It is inexpensive to add and routinely absent.

What about selling online?+

Ecommerce widens your exposure to every state you ship to, and adds cyber and payment data risk. Major platforms also require proof of product liability above modest sales volumes, so it becomes a commercial requirement as well as a protection.

Is customer injury the main liability risk?+

It is the most frequent. Slips, falls, falling displays and parking areas produce the majority of retail liability claims, which is why limits should not be set at the minimum a landlord accepts.

What does business interruption do for a shop?+

Replaces lost income and covers continuing expenses while you cannot trade. For a seasonal retailer, timing matters enormously: closure in December is not equivalent to closure in February, and the policy should reflect that.
