Health Coverage

Private Health Insurance.

For the people the exchange serves worst. If you earn too much for a subsidy, travel for work, or want a doctor the Marketplace will not cover, this is the other door.

Private health insurance is sold directly by carriers rather than through the exchange. That changes three things at once: the network is often national rather than regional, you can usually buy in any month of the year, and pricing can reflect your health instead of only your age and zip code. For a healthy household above the subsidy line, that combination is frequently better than anything the Marketplace offers. For anyone else, it can be a costly mistake. Knowing which you are is the entire decision.

Two very different things share this name

This is the distinction that decides whether private coverage protects you or exposes you, and almost nobody explains it before quoting a price.

ACA-compliant, sold off the exchange

Same federal rules as a Marketplace plan. All ten essential benefit categories, an annual cap on what you can be asked to pay, and no medical underwriting — your history cannot be used against you. What you gain by buying off the exchange is often a broader network and a wider choice of carrier. What you give up is the subsidy, which is why this route makes sense mainly above the income line.

Non-ACA private plans

Often presented as PPO or indemnity products, and priced considerably lower. The reason for the lower price is that these plans can underwrite: an applicant may be declined outright, charged more, or issued with a waiting period, commonly six to twelve months, on anything pre-existing. Benefit caps are common and some carry no true ceiling on your own exposure.

Neither is inherently better. But being shown the second while believing you are buying the first is how people end up uninsured at the worst possible moment. Before anything is quoted, establish which one is on the table.

The question that decides it

Does this plan ask about my health?

If the application asks medical questions, the carrier can decline you or exclude a condition. If it does not, it cannot. One question separates guaranteed coverage from conditional coverage, and it is the first thing we establish on any private quote.

When it is the right answer

Four situations where private is simply better

If any of these describe you, the exchange is probably costing you money, access, or both.

You earn above the subsidy line

Roughly $62,600 for one person or $128,600 for a household of four. Above it you receive nothing from the exchange, so its central advantage disappears and you are free to shop on network and terms instead.

You want a national network

Most Marketplace plans are regional HMOs built around one hospital system. Private plans frequently offer a national PPO, no referrals, and care that travels with you.

You need coverage now

Open Enrollment is closed most of the year and a qualifying event is required to get in. Private plans sell in any month, which for a genuine gap is the difference between covered and not.

You are healthy and want it priced that way

The exchange cannot reward good health; it prices on age and zip code alone. An underwritten plan can, and for a healthy household the saving is often substantial.

When to walk away

And four where it is the wrong call.

We will tell you this plainly, including when it means we write you a smaller policy or none at all. A private plan sold to the wrong household is worse than no advice.

You have real health history

Underwriting is the whole story. A condition can mean a decline, a surcharge, or an exclusion on the exact treatment you need. The Marketplace cannot do any of those things.

You are pregnant or planning to be

Maternity is an essential benefit on ACA-compliant coverage and covered from day one, even mid-pregnancy. On non-ACA plans it is frequently excluded entirely.

You take regular medication

Formularies on non-ACA plans are narrower and caps are common. A drug that costs a copay on one plan can cost hundreds on another.

You qualify for a subsidy

Under the income line, financial help usually beats anything private can price, and a Silver plan with cost-sharing reductions is often better coverage for less money.

How you get approved

What underwriting actually looks at

People imagine a medical examination. In practice it is usually a questionnaire and a records check, and the decision often arrives within days. What matters is that carriers weigh the same facts very differently. The same application can be accepted at a standard rate by one carrier, surcharged by a second, and declined by a third.

That variation is the whole reason to use a broker here rather than apply directly. Applying to the wrong carrier first can produce a decline that follows you. We place the case where it is viewed most favourably, and we do not submit it anywhere until we believe it will be accepted.

Why work with us

We are on the other side of the table.

A carrier's agent can offer you one company's answer. We are appointed with a very wide range of carriers in every region, and our obligation is to find the plan that actually fits, at the best price it can be had for.

We compare both routes

Private and Marketplace, priced side by side. If the exchange is better for you we will say so, even though it is the smaller sale.

Your doctors come first

Names and prescriptions are checked against every network and formulary before anything is signed. Coverage you cannot use is not coverage.

Placed where it is welcome

With a health history, carrier choice decides the outcome. We know which carriers view which conditions favourably.

Someone answers next year

A renewal that jumped, a claim that stalled, a plan leaving your county. You call the office that wrote the policy.

Questions we hear daily

Private coverage, answered plainly

Can a private plan turn me down?+

A non-ACA private plan can, yes. It may decline you, charge more, or exclude a condition for a period. An ACA-compliant plan sold off the exchange cannot do any of those things. Establishing which type you are being offered is the first thing that should happen, and it frequently does not.

Is private cheaper than the Marketplace?+

It depends entirely on whether you qualify for help. Above the subsidy line, private often prices better and offers more network. Below it, financial help usually wins by a wide margin, and a Silver plan with cost-sharing reductions can be better coverage for less money than anything private can quote. The only way to know is to run both.

Can I buy at any time of year?+

Generally yes, and this is one of the strongest arguments for the private route. Marketplace coverage requires Open Enrollment or a qualifying life event, so for most of the year that door is shut. Private plans are sold in any month, which for a genuine coverage gap is the difference between insured and exposed.

Will my own doctor be covered?+

More often than on the exchange, because private plans frequently use national PPO networks rather than a regional HMO. But it is never assumed. Give us the names before you enrol and we verify every one, along with your prescriptions. This single step prevents the most common regret in health insurance.

What about a pre-existing condition?+

On ACA-compliant coverage it is irrelevant, on or off the exchange. On non-ACA plans it is central, and waiting periods of six to twelve months are common. If you have real history, that usually points toward the Marketplace, and we will tell you so even though it is not the larger sale.

Is short-term medical the same thing?+

No, and the difference matters. Short-term medical is temporary and limited by design: it can decline you, it usually excludes anything pre-existing, and many policies have no real ceiling on what you could owe. It has a legitimate use for a healthy person bridging a genuine gap. It is not a substitute for major medical and should never be presented as one.

Does it cost me more to use an advisor?+

Nothing. Rates are filed with your state, so the same plan from the same carrier costs the same whether you buy it direct or through us. What changes is that we can put a wide range of carriers in competition, and place your application where it is most likely to be accepted on good terms.

Can I switch to a Marketplace plan later?+

Yes, at the next Open Enrollment, or sooner with a qualifying event. Worth knowing though: dropping a private plan voluntarily is not itself a qualifying event, so timing matters. If there is any chance you will want to move, that is worth planning at the outset rather than discovering in March.
