Medicare.

One decision, made once, that is hard to undo. Most people spend more time choosing a phone than choosing how their healthcare works for the rest of their life.

Medicare itself is not complicated. What makes it feel that way is the volume of mail, the phone calls, and the fact that nobody explains the one thing that matters most: whether you can change your mind later. Some choices here are reversible and some are not, and that depends on your state rather than on the plan. We start there, before anyone talks to you about a premium.

What Medicare actually is

Medicare is four pieces, and you do not choose all four the same way. Part A covers hospital care and most people have paid for it through decades of payroll tax, so it costs nothing in premium. Part B covers doctors, outpatient care and equipment, and carries a monthly premium.

Those two together are called Original Medicare, and on their own they leave real gaps. Which brings you to the actual decision: Part C, known as Medicare Advantage, in which a private carrier delivers your A and B through a network and usually folds in drug coverage and extras. Or Original Medicare plus a Supplement to cover what it does not, with Part D added separately for prescriptions.

The gap nobody mentions

Part B pays eighty percent of covered outpatient care. The other twenty percent has no annual ceiling on Original Medicare. Twenty percent of a routine year is manageable. Twenty percent of a serious year is not, and there is no cap to stop it. Original Medicare also covers no routine dental, vision or hearing, and no long-term custodial care at all.

Every supplemental product exists to close some part of that gap. Understanding which gap you are actually worried about is what makes the choice simple.

The question that matters most

Can I change my mind in three years?

Nobody asks this, and it is the one that decides everything. Moving into Advantage is always easy. Moving back to a Supplement later can require passing health questions, and in most states a carrier may decline you. The answer depends on where you live.

The real decision

Advantage or Supplement, honestly compared

Neither is better. They are opposite trades, and the right one depends on how you want to pay and how freely you want to choose your doctors.

Advantage, pay less monthly

Lower premium, often zero, with drug coverage and extras such as dental or fitness frequently bundled in. There is an annual ceiling on what you can be asked to pay, which Original Medicare lacks.

Advantage, the trade

Care runs through a network set at county level, referrals may be required, and the network, formulary and costs can change every year. If you travel or winter elsewhere, that matters.

Supplement, pay less at the point of care

Use almost any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, with no referrals and very little to pay when you receive care. Nationwide freedom, and predictability.

Supplement, the trade

A higher monthly premium, and Part D bought separately. Plans are standardised by letter, so the same letter is the same coverage at every carrier and only the price differs.

A useful way to decide: if a predictable monthly cost and complete freedom of provider matter more than the premium, a Supplement is usually the answer. If keeping the monthly cost low matters more and your care is local and routine, Advantage often is. What should never decide it is which advertisement arrived first.

Timing

The windows, and what waiting costs

Medicare is unusually strict about timing, and the consequences of missing a window are permanent rather than inconvenient. There are four you need to know.

Your first window

Seven months around your sixty-fifth birthday: the three before, the month itself, and the three after. Enrolling before your birthday month is what avoids a gap in coverage.

The Medigap window

Six months from when your Part B begins. During it, no carrier may ask a health question or decline you. This is the most valuable and least understood right in Medicare.

Annual Enrollment

Every autumn you may change Advantage and Part D plans for the following year. This is the moment to react if your plan changed its network or formulary, and most people never look.

If you are still working

Creditable coverage through active employment lets you delay Part B without penalty. Whether yours qualifies is a specific question with a specific answer, and worth confirming rather than assuming.

The penalty for late Part B enrollment is roughly ten percent for every full year you could have enrolled and did not, and it remains on your premium for the rest of your life. Part D carries its own version. These are not fees you pay once.

Where you live

Your state decides whether this is reversible

This is the part almost no advertisement mentions, and it is the difference between a decision you can revisit and one you are living with.

A small number of states let you move between Supplements at any time with no health questions asked. Another group gives you an annual window around your birthday to switch to equal or lesser benefits, again with no questions. Everywhere else, once your initial six months have passed, a carrier may review your health and decline you.

Two consequences follow. First, in most states the choice you make at sixty-five is effectively the one you keep. Second, if you move house across a state line, your rights change on the day you become a resident. Neither fact appears in the mail you have been receiving.

Rights differ enormously by state. Tell me where you live and I will explain yours →
Why work with us

No pressure, and no preference.

Medicare pricing is filed and regulated, so nobody can offer you a better price on the same plan. What an advisor changes is whether anyone read the details before you signed.

We explain the trade, not a product

Advantage and Supplement both have a real case. You will hear both, including the parts that do not suit you.

Your state rules come first

Before any plan is discussed, you will know whether your decision is reversible where you live. That changes what we would recommend.

Doctors and drugs verified

Every physician and every prescription checked against the network and formulary before you enroll, and again at renewal when they change.

We are here next year

Plans change annually and some withdraw from a county entirely. You call the office that enrolled you, not a call centre.

Questions we hear daily

Medicare, answered plainly

Should I take Advantage or a Supplement?+

They are opposite trades and there is no universal answer. Advantage usually costs less each month, often bundles drug coverage and extras, and works inside a network with an annual out-of-pocket ceiling. A Supplement costs more monthly but lets you use almost any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, with very little to pay at the point of care. The honest question is whether you would rather pay steadily and predictably, or pay less now and more when you need care.

Can I switch from Advantage to a Supplement later?+

Going in is easy. Coming back may not be. After your initial six-month Medigap window, most states allow carriers to ask health questions and decline you. A few protect you year-round, and several give you an annual window around your birthday to switch to equal or lesser benefits with no health questions. Which applies depends entirely on your state, and it is the single most important thing to understand before you choose.

I am healthy. Can I just enroll later?+

You can delay, but the penalties are permanent. Part B adds roughly ten percent for every full year you were eligible and not enrolled, and it stays on your premium for life. Part D works similarly. There is one legitimate exception: if you have creditable coverage through active employment, you can delay without penalty. Establishing whether your coverage qualifies is the first thing to check.

Does Medicare cover everything?+

No, and this is where people are most surprised. Part B pays eighty percent of outpatient care and the remaining twenty percent has no annual ceiling on Original Medicare. It also covers no routine dental, vision or hearing, and it does not cover long-term custodial care. Those gaps are the entire reason supplemental coverage exists.

Will my doctors and prescriptions be covered?+

On a Supplement, generally yes, because you can use any provider who accepts Medicare. On Advantage it depends on the network, which is set at county level and can change each year. Prescriptions depend on the plan formulary, which also changes annually. We check every physician and every medication before you enroll, and again at each renewal.

My plan changed and I did not ask it to.+

That happens more than people realise. Advantage and Part D plans can change their networks, formularies and cost sharing each year, and carriers sometimes withdraw from a county entirely. You should receive an annual notice, and it is worth reading rather than filing. If your plan moved, the Annual Enrollment Period exists precisely so you can move with it.

Do I have to pay more for Medicare if I earned well?+

Higher-income beneficiaries pay an income-related adjustment on Parts B and D, based on a tax return from two years earlier. If your income has since dropped, because you retired for instance, that can be appealed with the right documentation. We will tell you when that applies rather than let you simply absorb it.

Does it cost me anything to use an advisor?+

Nothing. Medicare plan pricing is filed and regulated, so the same plan costs the same whether you enroll alone or with help. What changes is having someone who reads the network, the formulary and your state's switching rules before you commit, and who is still there when the plan changes next year.
